AARON CREURER
THE ARTIST

WHO IS … AC ?
I was born on the Canadian prairies and raised there with a hey-let’s-build-something kind of dad who often painted into the night and encouraged my interest in all things creative. After focusing on a more “sensible” career (whatever that is) for several years, I decided to get back to my roots. Today, I describe myself as a husband, a chef, an entrepreneur, a gardener – and an artist. I find the totality of these vastly more interesting than any of them is individually.
That perspective extends to my art as well, because I see my work as much more than the individual elements that compose it. I’m drawn to colors and textures, and fascinated by the life that found objects carried before I came along. The whole process of looking at something and giving it another life in another form drives a lot of my work.
I find inspiration everywhere, from old railroad spikes to a stack of wet, soggy paper nailed to a tree. It’s creating something completely new from odd things that catch my eye that I find so intriguing. Art is about the creation of it, and living in that moment of conception – living within your art – is always my goal because it’s an amazing way to work. That’s probably why my studio is full of all kinds of pieces in a lot of different mediums, in various stages of creation.
Collage Work
The seed for the collage series came from looking at Robert Rauschenberg’s work. Almost before I realized it, I found myself collecting paper and recycled posters around town. Then I came across an image from the 90s of two embryos under a microscope at the moment of fertilization. It made me think that we’re all born a certain way…you are who you are. And these collages came together very quickly from that. The photography is full of homoeroticism, desire, and fetishes. So while it’s intentionally provocative, there’s a tongue-in-cheek element to it all..

SCULPTURE
Sculpture is a new medium for me, and I find it really lends itself well to my “found object” approach to art. Take the railroad spikes. An entire civilization was built on those railroad spikes; they should have some meaning. When you look at things from that perspective, it brings you into the possibility. Which is where all art lives.
